Knight Gambeson with sewn mittens of the XIII century is made according to historically correct patterns. This type of padded armour can be seen on the miniatures and in Maciejowski Bible. Often, soldiers worn chain mail over such type of gambeson.

You give us your specific measures and wishes - we make you a completely custom gambeson that will bring you joy and comfort for a long time!

Made-to-measure gambeson may be sewn by two ways:

  • Machine manufacturing. Tailors will make padded armor by your parameters, using sewing machine.
  • Hand sewing. Custom gambeson armour will be completely sewn by hands of our tailors. Such type of manufacture is historical one and is offered for additional costs.

Base price includes following options:

  1. 1-2 layers of padding (natural sheet wadding 50% cotton, 50% wool);
  2. Natural (uncoloured) cotton for outer and inner shell;
  3. Standard sleeves’ attaching (closed armpit);
  4. XS-size;
  5. Black leather strap;
  6. Straight bottom edge;
  7. No fastenings for steel arms.

Gambison has cut from the front on the bottom hem and leather lacing on the collar. Cuts on the palms of the sewn mittens allow freeing the hands if necessary.

Material and decorations of gambeson of medieval times pointed out social status of owner. Rich knights were wearing velvet, wool, leather or silk gambeson. At the same time, foot soldiers and infantrymen were using cotton or linen gambesons.

Quantity of padding layer depends on the main armour. If you plan to wear gambeson under the hauberk, so 5-6 layers will be required. If there will be usual plate armour or brigandine, so 2-3 layers of natural wadding is enough for light gambeson.

Various color are available for order. Green, red, blue or black gambesons were the most popular among warriors. If you choose half-coloured or quarter-coloured gambeson, please inform us by e-mail, what colours you prefer and its exact disposition.

You can use this gambeson armor for:

  • SCA
  • HEMA
  • Larp
  • Stage performances
  • Medieval festivals

If you plan to use plate arms or spaulders over your gambeson, we recommend you to order leather fastenings for steel arms.

Very high-quality work, perfect for 12th-13th century knightly harness. I went with the maximum padding, and I'm pretty pleased with the thickness even on the thinner arms. It's a lot lighter than I expected, but still feels like a good protective layer. The arms and mittens seemed like they'd be challenging to get a good fi with, but they're perfect, and the armor comes on and off way more easily than my cheap gambeson does; I won't have to do a several minute knight dance after all!

I shall start with noting the faultless quality; it’s in every stitch, warp and weft. I ordered a custom-fitted gambeson and gave my measurements and I’ve used it with steel weapons and on stage. It fits beautifully and really is very authentic. These were used for hundreds of years in the early mediaeval period. I highly recommend.

Great Product it was of extremely high quality and exactly what I ordered. When it says custom design they take the time to work with you and make sure they are building the suit that is right for you. Sound contact all the way through the process keeping you updated on progress and always happy to talk.
This is a great gambeson. It is very sturdy and well made, with a good historical feel. I chose maximum padding, 5 layers, and in addition to being very protective it wears surprisingly light and is very comfortable. If you go with this option I would recommend getting the open armpits however, because it gets very hot at this thickness. And finally, Steel-mastery's customer service is excellent. After ordering the gambeson I found that I had misunderstood the measuring procedure, and they went ahead and made a whole new gambeson without extra charge.

Amazing quality for such a prize. It's very comfortable to wear and does its job 100%. Only prob I had was with the laces but that was easily taken care of.
