About Full armour

Medieval armour was playing a huge role in the life of European knights for centuries. Armour played not only protective role on the battlefield or during the tournament, but also was a welfare measure. Of course, not every warrior could afford full-plate armour. Most of them were equipped with one or only few elements of body protection.

So called Churburg armour of the XIV century did not cover all body, but consisted of few plate parts: breastplate, plate limbs’ protection and helmet (most often - Hounskull bascinet).  Elements of this medieval armour are kept in the Armoury of the Castle of Churburg in South Tyrol now.

XV century is considered to be a period of efflorescence of armature. European armourers were famous for their work. Armour was not only very beautiful, but also had perfect technical and protective characteristics.

Unique type of plate armour - Milanese armour - was developed in the end of the XIV century in Italy. There was first type of armour, which covered almost all body of knight. Typical feature of this armour was a cuirass of plain roundish shape. Elements of cuirass were attached with leather belts to each other. Left spaulder was larger than the right one, so the left elbow cap was. Such design allowed stop using of heavy shield.

Full-plate Milanese armour included helmet armet with rondel (and later - with different types of visors). Besides armet, milanese armourers used such medieval helmets as barbute, sallet and other types. Plate gauntlets with long wristbands were protecting hands and wrists.

German armour of the XV century was notable for sharp corners. So due its similarity to gothic style in architecture of these times, it was called gothic armour. It’s considered to be the best type of full-plate armour. Elongated shape of gauntlets' wristbands, pointed sabatons made gothic armour very specific outer look.

Another specific feature of gothic armour was a good mobility. It was achieved due to increasing of armour’s parts and reduction of its size. Warrior could freely bend and turn, move his arms and legs in such armour.

Reinforcement ribs and ribbing of the steel surface made armour stronger and more reliable. Also, it allowed meeting hits of bladed weapon. General weight of armour was reduced as well.

Head was protected with helmet sallet with elongated back side. Metal gorget (bevor) was protecting neck and chin and used with such types of helmet.

Steel Mastery offers hand-crafting of great variety of medieval full-plate armour of different styles and countries. Armour can be made of steel and titanium and decorated with etching, brass strips or painting. Crafting of armour is for individual measurements of customer.

And it is just WOW!:) + top customer support. Always quick replyes, updates on the status of my order + spare parts - belts, rivets and a couple of buckles The only one minus is a waiting time. Manager estimated making time so I was ready to wait. Anyhow if you order such armor for some event, so do it well in advance:) My deepest gratitude to all Steel mastery team for this fantastic work. My first grand purchase from Steel Mastery (before that I was ordering gambeson, brigandines and plenty of small padded things from them. Every time super quality and service). So when I finally decided to treat myself with a plate armor, there was only one shop which i knew will make it perfectly. Also I knew that it tooks not a month (or even two) to craft such armor. ANyhow, it costs every penny and every day of waiting. I received my order in 6.5 months, every piece was carefully wrapped, packages were easily tracked. Special thanks for client support - always fast answers, great help with all my questions before ordering. Fitting is flawless; armor's completely mobile (I'm able to walk, sit, jump etc.). It is heavy, indeed. But what's expect from such metal shell?:) I do highly recommend Steel Mastery as qualified and responsible shop.
