Tarsoly from Birka, fittings found in Birka by H. Arbmann (described in his book "Birka: Untersuchungen und Studien"). As strap mounts and strapend from the original set preserved very badly we took different ones which were found in the same burial. Size 16x16 cm.

Cast set was found in Shestovitsa mounds near the town of Chernigov, Ukraine, burial #110. The real shape of this pouch is unclear, so there are only theoretical reconstructions. Tarsoly (pronounced "tArshoy") is a type of belt pouch (10-11 century) of hungarian origin with long tradition. It was a kind of fashion of the time throughout Hungary and the lands to the East and North. It was usually decorated with brass mounts or with a single decorated metal plate. The richness of decoration of the tarsoly and of the belt on which it was worn demonstrated high rank, bravery and wealth of the owner. Size 17x16 cmю
