description

In front of you is a magnificent stylization of the steppe nomads and princedoms of Rus helmet (type IV according to Kirpichnikov's classification).

This model of helmet was named in honor of Nikolskoye village, where it was found in 1866 and is dated by the late XII-XIII centuries. Interesting that this type of helmet  firstly was thought to have disappeared in the XIII century as a result of the Tatar-Mongol invasion. However, judging by new data, it was in use until the XIV century.

Helmet of Nikolskoe, The State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, Russia

This is a special type of helmet in Eastern Europe and, in particular, in Rus from the midXII to XIV century. Such helmets were richly decorated with gold and silver, and some were made with ornaments and images of saints. According to Kirpichnikov, these battle headgears were accessories of nobles and princes whose social status was compared to that of European knights, such as tophelms in Europe, or helmets with a faceplate in Asia.

Original helmet has a flush riveted cupola of three parts with lengthwise flutes, which increases the helmet's hardness. Helmet's mask with eyeholes and hump-shaped nasal plate is riveted to the dome. Such a nasal guard type protects the nose and central part of the face.

Just as the original helmet we made ours with small holes by the edges of the mask. So if you are going to use this early medieval head protection, we strictly recommend you supplement it with chainmail or leather aventail. You definitely need it to protect your lower part of the face, throat and neck.

Such helmets were a head protection of noble men and feudal lords, decorated with silver, gold, ornaments and images of saints.

It's really nice replica, workmanship is fantastic. Helm is light and fits my head perfectly. I added aventail so low-face is also protected now. Thanks a lot
