Helm of Nikolskoe (Orel region. Russia). End of XII - XIII centuries
Helmet of Nikolsoe is named in honour of village Nikolskoe(Orel region, Russia), where it was found. Type IV in helmets' classification of A. Kirpichnikov. Such medieval helmets were widespread among tribes on the Salvic lands and eastern tribes in the end of XII-early XIII centuries. Dome of helmet is fluted for better firmness. There are welded seams inside the helmet for additional protection. Half-mask with eye-holes and nasal plate are being rivetted to the dome with steel or brass rivets. This model of Tophelm (Topfhelm, or Great Helm, or Grand Helm) is typical for cavalrymen of the XIV century. Helmet was worn over the mail coif, under what liner with stuffed roller was used. Late topfhelm was ofetn worn over the close-firtting skull cap cervellier, that in time was succeeded with bascinet. Then mail coif was replaced with aventail, that was attached to the under helm (cervellier or bascinet).
