XVth century Jeanne d'Arc gambeson

Meet new chic gambeson from Steel Mastery named after the great French heroine. This versatile pourpoint model will suit equally well for both men and ladies thanks to its unique cut based on the miniatures and descriptions of the four-parted purpuène – typical of the early XVth century. 

The authoritative researcher Adrien Harmand in his study “Jeanne d'Arc, son costume, son armure: essai de reconstitution” states that Jeanne d'Arc could have worn a padded armor of this cut. And contemporaries of the Maid of Orleans repeatedly mentioned that she preferred to wear black, seeking modesty and piety.

This stylish and modest linen gambeson is decorated with silver paint stamped French heraldic lilies that are the symbol of France – a country Jeanne d'Arc served and died for. In turn, silver stands for the white color in heraldry and symbolizes purity and innocence, which is also what the Maid of Orleans is famous for.

Note the new chic type of fastening – lacing with leather cord through the steel rings stitched on the gambeson. This is fully historical and compliant to all canons of reconstruction type of fastening. However, if desired, we can replace it with leather laces, leather straps, metal or fabric-covered buttons, or more familiar to most people lacing through the holes.

This model uses one layer of padding but we can increase the number up to five if you wish. Surely we can do more, but we strongly advise against it as it will greatly reduce mobility.

Of course, we do not insist you be as modest as Jeanne d'Arc, so we are ready to sew your pourpoint in any material: linen, cotton, wool, velvet, jacquard, leather.
