description

Gothic full armor kit for non-battle actions of the XV century

Gothic armor is a German kind of Milanese type of full armor set. It emerged in the second half of the XV century. The armour was very widespread on the territory of the Central Europe. The fact that it was worn by the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I added the popularity to the armor. In the name “Gothic” lies the likeness with the architecture of the time: upward trending and oblongness of the forms.

Compared to the original Milanese predecessor, the Gothic armour had several significant improvements. The details were smaller, which not only covered the body better, but eased the movement of legs and arms as well. The plates were also partly covered with corrugation. This brought an additional barrier of rigidity due to which the armor could stand the attack of the cold arms better.

Helmet sallet, which was popular in the Germanic lands, usually used with bevor. One of the distinguishing features was also plated sabatons with pointy tips. Gothic armor could be both with tassets or without them. Plated gloves consisted of a line of segments, which protected fingers but at the same time did not restrict the movement. The groin could be protected with a shell if it was for the foot soldiers. In other cases, the shell was not worn since the groin would be shielded by a horse.

The development of the Gothic armor occurred in two stages: during the period of “high” and “low” Gothic. Examples of the “high” Gothic differ due to a more marked waist, pointy tips of knees and elbows and the length of the toes. Sallets in this case had the face guard. In the last case the length of the toes of sabatons depended on the owner’s qualifications. “Low” Gothic was often of a lower quality since it was purchased by the middle classes. It had less corrugated stripes. The details were held together by the leather belts, which created a danger of cutting them with a sword during a battle.
