description

A practical, sleeveless padded garment designed for maximum mobility, comfort, and protection. This sleeveless aketon (historically known as a wamba) features simple vertical quilting and is filled with mixed or cotton batting, providing reliable torso padding for wear under armor or during intense training sessions.

Short Description

  • Material: 100% linen fabric with natural linen lining

  • Color: Natural (uncolored)

  • Layers: Up to 5

  • Size: Custom sizing available

Historical Note

Inspired by 13th-century European military garments, this sleeveless aketon—often referred to in medieval sources as a wamba or wambais—was widely worn beneath mail armor. The sleeveless design was highly favored by infantry and knights alike to prevent excessive bulk around the shoulders and arms while ensuring solid impact and friction protection for the torso. In historical practice, it was often worn as an extra protective layer over a standard long-sleeved quilted garment, which you can find here: Quilted Aketon — 13th Century. Following the distinct silhouette seen in High Middle Ages iconography, this piece offers a historically grounded look suitable for reenactment without aiming at museum-grade reconstruction.

Style & Use

  • Sleeveless design ensures perfect freedom of movement for arms during combat

  • Ideal for training, sparring, and HEMA practice

  • Provides essential protective padding under mail hauberks or plate armor

  • Perfect as an additional protective layer over a long-sleeved aketon or gambeson

  • Comfortable for historical reenactment training sessions

  • Designed for both beginners and advanced practitioners

  • Suitable as a standalone light padded defense garment or as a core underlayer
