description

A unique and highly mobile padded leg defense garment, meticulously designed for comfort and protection. Unlike typical vertical quilting, these chausses feature a smooth, non-quilted exterior surface. This construction offers a highly authentic profile under mail chausses, effectively absorbing impacts while maintaining a clean historical silhouette.

Short Description

  • Material: 100% linen fabric with natural linen lining
  • Color: Natural (uncolored)
  • Layers: Up to 5
  • Size: Custom sizing available

Historical Note

Inspired by 13th-century European military gear, these padded chausses were an essential element of a medieval warrior’s under-armor equipment. Depicted in High Middle Ages iconography (such as the Maciejowski Bible and Osprey manuscript plates), they were traditionally worn beneath mail armor to cushion heavy blows and prevent chafing.

To achieve a complete 13th-century silhouette, these chausses are designed to be paired with our torso protection options: the classic Quilted Aketon or the highly mobile Sleeveless Aketon. This piece offers a historically grounded look suitable for reenactment, without aiming at museum-grade reconstruction.

Style & Use

  • Ideal for training, sparring, and HEMA practice
  • Provides essential impact-absorbing padding under mail hauberks, mail chausses, or early plate armor
  • Pairs perfectly with both our long-sleeved and sleeveless 13th-century aketons for full-body protection
  • Comfortable for long historical reenactment training sessions and festivals
  • Designed for both beginners and advanced practitioners
  • Suitable as standalone padded leg defense
