Pilgrim badge in the form of a pair of bishop's gloves. Associated with the cult of St Thomas Beckett, patron saint of politicians.
The people of London accepted him as the co-patron saint of London with St Paul: both their images appeared on the seals of the city and the Lord Mayor. Also known as St Thomas of Canterbury, Thomas of London. Beckett was described by his contemporaries as intelligent, charming and authoritative. He was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 until his assassination in 1170. He is revered as a saint and martyr by both the Catholic Church and the Anglican community. He came into conflict with Henry II, king of England, over the rights and privileges of the church, and was assassinated by the king's followers in Canterbury Cathedral. Soon after his death he was canonized by Pope Alexander III. England, London, late fourteenth century.
Based on the book "Pilgrim souvenirs and Secular badges" by Brian Spencer.
Brass cast. Size 36 x 31 mm.
