description

Medieval viking shirt

Completing your set of historically accurate Viking clothing, you will face a great choice. Sea Dogs were true fashionists, but one element of costume was unchanged during centuries, varying only in small details. We are referring to traditional Viking shirt.

Length of such shirts varied from the mid-thigh to the knee (in the last case, despite of the gores, there were also cuts on the sides quite often). For example, a 28-inch length shirt of the V century that was found in Högom (Sweden). You may also see Vikings in short shirts on the Oseberg Tapestry, Picture stones from Gotland and rune stones from Sweden. But, manuscripts Liber Vitae, Bayeux Tapestry as well as Gotland stones and Oseberg Tapestry show us also knee-length shirts.

Man figure from the scene of parade on the Oseberg tapestry and King Cnut the Great from the Liber Vitae (British Library, UK).

If you need more objective evidences, than paintings, so here is remains of textiles from Kragelund, Hedeby and Birka, basing on which we may reconstruct Viking warrior shirt. Almost intact (by archaeological standards) expensive men’s linen shirt of 37 inches length had been found in burial place of the XI century in Viborg (Denmark).

Do you know Bjarni Herjólfsson? A Viking, who discovered America long before Columbus either in the 985 or 986 year?  He also helped Leif Erikson to sail to it and plant a colony Vinland - the first European settlement on the shores of North America. Well, now you will definitely not forget. So, Steel Mastery tailors sewn exact replica of medieval Viking shirt, which could be worn by discoverers’ of America.

You may choose cotton, linen or wool for your shirt. It may be made as of unbleached fabric so of any color you want. Besides, on the neckline and sleeves’ edges, this Viking shirt is decorated with handmade embroidered ornament, typical for Norsemen.
