Eagle was always one of the major symbols of power. Originated from Mesopotamia in the IVth millennium BC, the single-headed eagle comes to Byzantium from Roman Empire. From the very beginning of the Byzantine Empire, in the VI century, there were used Eagle-topped scepters and coins with images of eagles. Eagles used in bas-reliefs in churches and funerary monuments, sewn on imperial garments and cushions, shown in manuscripts.
