Based on the the Royal Collection, Leeds, England. Our blacksmith recreated the exact shape of historical sabatons. It has seven plates constructed to follow the foot shape. The heel plate is articulated and hinged on the inner side, while it fastens with a strap on the outer side.

Milanese sabatons from the period of 1450 to 1485 were a type of armor designed to protect the feet of a fully armored knight. Sabatons were part of a complete suit of plate armor, which was developed during the late medieval period to provide comprehensive protection for the wearer. Milanese sabatons were typically made from steel and consisted of several articulated plates. These plates were carefully hinged together to allow flexibility and movement while maintaining protection.

Over time, the design of Milanese sabatons evolved, and variations appeared based on the preferences of knights and armorers. Some sabatons featured exaggerated pointed toes, while others had rounded or squared-off styles. Towards the late 15th century, the use of full plate armor, including sabatons, began to decline as battlefield tactics and weaponry evolved. With the advent of firearms and more mobile infantry units, the heavily armored knight became less effective on the battlefield.
