European gambeson is one of the most popular padded armor of X-XII centuries.

This closed-front model was very reliable and provided good protection together with main armor.

This gambeson jacket was widespread among medieval knights, soldiers and warriors of different armed services.

Our tailors make padded gambesons by histocial patterns and basing on the ancient pictures of this padded underarmor. So, you will get not only comfortable and good-fitting aketon armor, but also historically accurate padded underarmor.

Made-to-measure gambeson armour may be sewn by two ways:

  • Machine manufacturing. Tailors will make padded armor by your parameters, using sewing machine.
  • Hand sewing. Custom gambeson will be completely sewn by hands of our tailors. Such type of manufacture is historical one and is offered for additional costs.

Warriors worn such type of closed-front gambeson under the chain mail, and in this case gambeson coat had 4-6 layers of padding. If you plan to wear it under brigandine or plate armour, so 2 layers of padding will be enough. Gambeson material is also an option to choose. It can be velvet or linen gambison with cotton lining, for example.

More often it has being made of linen or wool, but leather gambesons or cotton are known too. Such light gambesons are typical for knights, who were taking a participation in crusades and were seeing the war on the Holy Land.

There are a lot of festoons for decoration of your quilted gambeson. If you choose half-coloured or quarter-coloured gambeson, please inform us by e-mail, what colours you prefer and its exact disposition.

If you plan to use plate arms or spaulders over your medieval gambeson, we recommend you to order leather fastenings for steel arms.

Delivery

My gambeson fits really well. Unfortunately, I have grown fat so it is not easy to find suitable things. The workmanship is good too. The care is also good (Ann does it great.) I took a 2 layer gambeson, for people who do LARP in Germany that is sufficient. This gambeson will be my "winter gambeson". I'll have a thinner one made for the summer.My english is not that good i hope this article was helpful.

Great gambeson! My one complaint is that the cuffs of the sleeves were a bit too tight but that was easily fixed and was probably my fault for not measuring my wrists correctly.
