Medieval carnival badge. Size 25x40 mm. Badge depicts a woman seated on a man's lap. And the woman plays a long, longitudinal flute. To a viewer in the twentieth or twenty-first centuries, the subject seems almost lyrical. At the same time, for the Middle Ages it was an overt and provocative depiction of sensuality. It is the fact that the lady plays the flute that suggests that it is the inhabitant of the "merry house" (and not just a couple in love) who is depicted. With this detail the badge looks like a scene of a revelry in a house of tolerance where visitors could be entertained including playing musical instruments. One of the inhabitants, seated on her client's lap, continues playing a flute. Netherlands, XIV-XV century. Based on Jos Kolderweij's book "Sieraad en devotie in middeleews vlaandreen".
