Lining fabric

Kirtle, sometimes also called cotte or cotehardie is a versatile XVth century women's outfit. Worn everywhere in Europe by ladies of all estates, from peasant maids to queens, it will become a staple of your medieval wardrobe.

Steel Mastery's seamstresses have sewn a classic Burgundian kirtle for you which can be either a base or a top dress, depending on your social status and the weather.

If you have chosen the image of a middle-class peasant or townswoman, you'll only need to supplement this medieval dress with an undershirt-camise. But reconstructing a rich townswoman or noblewoman, you'll have to wear another kirtle over camisa and kirtle. Or a surcoat. Or a "Burgundian" dress. Or a cloak! And although, judging from the paintings and miniatures, appearing in public wearing only a kirtle over a kamisa was not considered indecent, the more dresses the better.

Kirtles can be either cut at the waist or cut in one piece, and we do offer the first option, though we can also make the second one if you wish. Also our fitted kirtle with quite popular in that period short sleeves which let you flaunt with snow-white sleeves of cambric camise in summer and boast with brocade sleeves pinned over it on chilly days. We can also sew your kirtle with or without lining, according to your specific wishes. The lining can be of contrasting colours and, in special order, the sets can also be reversible. 2 kirtles for the price of 1! Medieval black friday no matter what day it is! Hurry up to place your order now!

Kirtle is fastened with lacing at the front, the lacing holes are delicately handmade and for the lacing we offer a handmade lace-up, which we recommend to decorate with cast pins from our collection.

You should also order at least an undershirt, headdress, medieval women s stockings, bag and shoes to complement the kirtle.

By the way, when the kirtle was worn under the top dress, an insert of thick fabric was pinned up to its bodice, which was visible in the neckline of the top dress. You can also choose to order one for you.
